SPACE MARINES VERSUS NECRONS, TACTICA AND THOUGHTS.

Rpnightsend has written this awesome piece on facing Necrons with your space marines,
I hope you find it usefull, my last fight against them didnt go well at all for me!

"Space Marines and the New Necron Codex
I’ve been playing against (and occasionally alongside) Necron for almost as long as I’ve been playing Warhammer, and my group’s Necron players have had to adapt to a number of new codices of mine since we started playing. With the new Necron codex it’s been my turn to have to adapt, and I’ve pitted a number of different Codex: Space Marines and Dark Angels lists against a variety of Necron armies, so here’s my two cents about the new Necron and how to beat them with your trusty Space Marines.

Mobility
This was the single biggest underestimation I made while playing against the new Necron. With a slew of new fast, flying transports and gunships, I found a previously very slow army flying circles around my rhinos and predators. So far my mid-ranged and deep striking lists have performed very poorly against Necron, as they tend to glance my tanks to death and can move too quickly out of the way of my deep striking units. My close-combat centric mechanized lists have performed well, though not spectacularly, but they’re still a good deal faster than me. Footslogging lists have been a toss-up, but assault marines and land speeders do a good job of keeping up with their Ghost Arks and Catacomb Command Barges.
If you’re expecting to fight a mechanized Necron list, my best performers have been my terminators (who they tend to lack enough firepower to kill), Land Speeders, and Assault Marines. Rhino Squads, Vindicators, and Dreadnoughts tend to perform poorly.
Firepower
Necron have always been a shooty army and the new codex did little to change that. What it did do was introduce a number of powerful shooting units including triarch stalkers, crypteks and deathmarks, both adding new shooting units and adding options to older units such as warriors and destroyers. For me, the second part of the old maxim “Shoot the chargy stuff and charge the shooty stuff” has held true. With no boost to their initiative and few options to improve close combat potential, the bulk of the shooting Necron units, including destroyers, immortals and warriors are as susceptible to close combat as ever. Necron Lords losing their power weapons (at least without an upgrade to a warscythe) removes a measure of their counter-assault ability and the ability of solar pulses to bring night fighting over the field doesn’t protect them from being charged.
Equipment makes a lot of the difference when it comes to this. Remember to give all of your tactical squads a power fist and even they will pose plenty of a threat to most Necron units. On several occasions I’ve gotten a dreadnought in close combat and my Necron opponent has found he has no way to kill it until it comes out of combat.

Durability
Another old strength of the Necron, they’ve had both gains and losses in this category in the new codex. Although their new Reanimation Protocol can’t be ignored, it’s only on a 5+ without a resurrection orb now. Additionally, warriors only have a 4+ armor save and immortals lost a point of toughness. The biggest loss for them is the changes in living metal to no longer provide nearly as much protection. In return they’ve gained Quantum Shielding on many of their vehicles, which so far has been one of the single most frustrating abilities I’ve ever had to fight against. Many common tactics for taking out light vehicles such as Riflemen dreadnoughts and Heavy Bolter/Autocannon predators will barely leave a scratch on their vehicles until the shielding is gone. The advantage for us is that we only need one penetrating hit to remove the shielding and leave them a nice target for our autocannons and assault cannons. Small numbers of lascannons and missile launchers can do this from range, but nothing works better than reliable meltaguns and multi-meltas which, given the fact most of their vehicles are open topped, will probably kill their vehicle or seriously disable it on the first hit anyways.
Against infantry, most of the old ways of fighting Necron are still effective, including plenty of plasma and power weapons. The lower armor of warriors means autocannons and heavy bolters will work wonders against them too. Unfortunately none of these will do much against that nasty quantum shielding, and its up to chainfists, melta weaponry, and the odd shot from a Lascannon to handle most of their vehicles."

MINOTAURS TERMINATOR LIBRARIAN WIP

Today i recieved my 25th anniversary crimson fist space marines, i was NOt at all happy with the casting quality on these and have sent a snotty E mail to GW.
I cdant believe they allow quality like this out of the door. it will be interesting to see their reaction as it now seems they say "resin is meant to have defects" which is complete bullshit. if they try this line on you DO NOT accept it.
If you pay for a new item, you expect new item quality!

anyway, Rant over!

As of now all my carcharodons are on hold, I'm concentrating on the Minotaurs.
I reprimed the librarian and have now started on painting him as a Minotaur.
I'm a bit stumped as to where to put some kind of chapter heraldry without it looking forced? the pads are already full of "stuff" so they are a no no!

Anyway let me know what you think so far!

Heres the pics!

NEW PURCHASES: THE OUTCAST DEAD, WINDSOR AND NEWTON SERIES 7 BRUSHES, FORGE WORLD MK 5 HERESY ARMOUR AND SOME TEXTURED PLASTICARD.

I want to start this by saying, "TEXTURED PLASTICARD IS  A RIP OFF"

I'm glad i got that out of my system.

I've purchased "the outcast dead" by the black library to read after i've finished my current stephen king book "skeleton crew" (you know the one with the mist in.) I've really enjoyed the heresy series so far so look forward to getting this read and reviewed soon.

Also up is some brush soap, how my poor brushes have needed this for the last year and i have neglected them. (shame on me) for £4 for a life times supply (unless you lose it like i did last time) you cant REALLY complain. GET SOME.

Theres also 2 brand spanking new Windsor and newton series 7's in sizes 00 and 000. I used to use the miniature series but now trying that standard 7's out.
Theres not much in it to be honest... i hope to do a little comparison soon.(also including that crappy eavy metal brush set they released around christmas)

The textured plasticard i want for basing, but i;ve already summed that up at the start of the post..

Finally theres a set of MK 5 heresy era armour from forge world. Just the thing for my carcharodons army!
I'm going to post a good look at the contents of this set when i crack it open.

Heres the pic.

GOLDEN DEMON WINNERS 1988 STANDARD BEARER CATEGORY

Hi all! hope youre all having an awesome valentines day?

Today i will be looking at Golden demon 1988's standard bearer category.

1st place went to Hew Bowles with this awesome beastman type thing! (i love how the olsd minis are sometimes unrecognisable! I love the face on the banner, and i also love those mushrooms! Old skool fantasy for the win!

Next up is this Dwarf banner bearer by D.P.Pearson, Looks like hes showing for Bugmans! (do they or did they ever have their own army?) it APPEARS to be a winged pair of hands and feet with a triangular face? sitting on a barrel! completely bizzare! i like it!

Third place is R.Leinham's Goblin? bearer, now, is that a shoulder or does it have two heads? i had to look twice!
And finally theres an "honourable mention" for this Eldar Wraithlord bySteven Joyes. Then known as an Eldar Dreadnought.
I cant believe the mini is that old! I assume its from the Alaitoc Craftworld, but i cant be sure. I love that urban base! who's hand is that poking out i wonder?

What do you think of these? would they hold up nowadays?

HOW TO SAVE MONEY PRIMING YOUR MINIATURES.

Hi all, While building my Carcharodons terminator librarian space hulk conversion, i decided to try a different method of priming. I used to spend a LOT of money on primer for my miniatures, either buying GW's chaos black/Skull white or halfords grey primer.

These aerosols are not cheap at all. they also have the added drawback of smelling, and having to use them outside.

I am now going to show you how to save a ton of money and save you going outside risking life and limb in cold rainy weather!

First all you need is an airbrush. (if you dont have one i recommend one!) then a bottle of airbrush primer like this.

then all you do is paint it with the primer using your airbrush, getting results like so:

I'm really pleased with the results and all i used was a few ml of paint from the bottle! had i used spray primer i would have wasted LOADS. This has saved me a lot of money.

This pot costs around £2 and i'm sure will cover the same amount of minis as a £9 aerosol...

This works REALLY well when priming single miniatures, or small squads. if priming something huge, like a piece of terrain for example i would still go aerosol but for minis and tanks, i feel this is DEFINATELY more suitable.

You can even buy this primer in different colours from vallejo stockists, and also in bigger pots, saving you EVEN MORE money per ml.

This is the way i'm going in future!

Adios spraying expensive aerosol cans in the wind in winter!

what do you use to prime your models? how does it go for you?

GAMES DAY 1988 SCRATCH BUILT VEHICLE WINNERS.

Hi all, i've been trawling the internets for some pictures of old golden demon winners.

i thought i had to share these with you.

These are the 2nd and 3rd place results of the "Scratch built vehicle conversion" category (dont do em like they used to eh?) Unfortunately the 1st place mini picture is nowhere to be found!

Anyway heres the pics,

2nd place, Markham egglestons interesting vehcle. to me it looks like a slab sided rhino/chimera hybrid! I like it!

3rd place,  Richard kernicks has produced this "Stack of rhinos"? these days i assume this would be an Ork contraption. but i like it nonetheless.
I'm surprised how much i like the old miniatures, they sem a lot more "interesting" to the eye, even if it is for the wrong reasons?

Do you remember an old Golden Demon entry you liked? What was it?

SCRATCH BUILT HELLHOUND UNIT WIP

This is a post from our friend "Tinners" hes been hard at work on some Hellhound models based on the old Epic incarnation.

Heres what he had to say about them.
" I've always personally liked a lot of the old Epic 40,000 models, the old Hellhound in particular. I attempted to make them before, but wasn't overly happy, so I decided to try again."

And heres the results so far..

Yet another project. Old Skool Hellhounds:

Started work:

And how they sit:

AIRBRUSH ESSENTIALS

Hi guys, recently i've been playing around a lot with my airbrush. I've learnt a couple of things i feel i should pass on to you all.
What ive found is, although my compressor has a water trap, it is still not 100% efficient. Water still manages to come spurting through every now and then. even if its once per session, you can be sure it will be at the most awkward time! To remedy this i have bought another water trap, a smaller one that attaches to the airbrush itself.

These things are definately worth it, they cost around £7 from E bay.

Ive also knocked up a cheap airbrush stand from a rectangular piece of wood with a notch cut out of the top, and some velcro to attach it to the wall!

I'm really pleased with these simple additions.

Have you made any additions to your airbrush set up? do you have any handy hints to share with us? We'd love to hear from you!

CARCHARODONS LIBRARIAN (WIP SUNDAY)

Hi all, now i have finally finished that realm of battle gameboard, i can finally paint some more marines! I've a lot planned in the upcoming weeks and the first unit will be my HQ.

My HQ consists of a Terminator Librarian equipped with a force weapon (default) and a storm shield.

This guy will be drop podding on an enemy held objective with a tactical squad equipped and locator beacon.

He can shoot em up with his Librarian powers and have a little backup in shooting from the tacs, then after i get assaulted (im confident this will happen!) the locator beacon on the pod brings in some teleporting terminators (with tyberos prioxying as the sargeant.)

Heres the WIP pics.

Hope you like what you see.
